Tips for Anyone New to Adoption
Please do ask him the usual questions when you meet him like “how old are you?”
Please don’t ask about his adoption or background in front of him. We are happy to answer any questions about the adoption process in private any time!
Please do refer to us as his mommy and daddy even though he may call us by our first names sometimes. It’s ok if he talks about having another mommy too, because it’s true!
Please don’t tell him that he is lucky – we are the lucky ones!
If you are wondering what to tell your children or grandchildren about Ella’s new brother – we tell Ella that some children come to their family from their mother’s tummies and others come from adoption but they are all the same either way. We are an "adoptive family" rather than having one child that is adopted. When they ask questions about what adoption means we say that some children are adopted because their birth parents are not able to take care of them for grown-ups reasons. We are very matter of fact about it.
